Sráid Capel

Sráid Capel is one of my favourite streets in Dublin and I was more than a little annoyed when DCC made a dog's dinner of the middle part of it last year (see Blog 9/17/07). So it was with some trepidation that I watched the roadworks in progress there for the last few months! Was Mr Green Party/ Bicycle loving/Car Hating/"town planner" at it again? Was he going to finish off Capel Street for cars?

I am a firm believer that streets should be vibrant places.... a melting pot, a living, breathing space - full of life, commerce, homes, shops, people, noise, "Bananas - 5 for one Euro",- EVEN traffic (and car horns sometimes)..

Mr DCC, I suspect, likes most of the above, except cars..

So, it was a great relief to walk home via Capel Street tonight and to discover that the roadworks only involve upgrading the pavements. And, I have to say they look very well!

Mr DCC must be on holidays. Shhhh...

I bet that back in 1982 there were people who expressed the same disapproval to closing Grafton Street for cars.
I assume You are a devoted driver if cars make a vibrant public space for You. With all that noise and fumes... You are a diesel lover, arent you ;) ?

I am all in favour of Pedestrianized streets, the more the better. However we still need cars, every City does - even the ones with a decent public transport system (which Dublin does not have).
My car is a necessity - I need it for my job, but apart from that I hardly ever use it. And yes it is a diesel and so causes less polution. In fact I walk most places in the City centre and for longer distances I use a motorbike, it being even more environmentally friendly.
The problem for Dublin is that the Council are actually creating more congestion and traffic problems. I can give other examples, apart from Capel Street, e.g. Upper Kevin Street where their costly "improvements" are causing traffic to back-up all the way to Stephen's Green.
